SHMazing SHORTS!

(April 2022)

The SHM Film Collective hosts events supporting ShrunkenHead filmmaking including: Film Screenings, Panels, Q&A, Guest Speakers, etc. Traditionally, we try to sponsor at least 2 events per year. We also sponsor short film screenings during the SHM Con.

The SHM Con of 2022, which happened in April 23rd of 2022, was the perfect venue for SHM Film Collective super special screening of all the SHM short films completed in 2020 and 2021. 14 films!!!!

We were so happy to be able to sponsor our first in-=person event, after 2 years of pandemic lockdown. There were so many films to show that the event was 2 hours long! After the screening we hosted a super awesome Q&A with the filmmakers. The Student Union was the perfect venue, with great seats and a very good projection and audio quality (though there were some delays and getting everything to work well in the beginning of the event, and we started almost 20 minutes late…

)  Even though everybody was wiped out after several hours of SHM Con, all the seats were taken and the theater was completely full. In the audience, SHM faculty, alumni, current students and their families were offered a great treat: films with amazing stories, told in all kinds of different visual styles.

These were 14 films that our community was able to complete during the pandemic! Not a small feat!

Q&A with the filmmakers

Carlos Saldanha, Feature film director

(April 2021)

Carlos Saldanha is a Brazilian filmmaker and one of the principal creative forces behind the Ice Age and Rio franchises at Blue Sky Studios. He is a two-time Academy Award nominee, first for his animated short film “Gone Nutty” (2004), and more recently his animated feature “Ferdinand” (2017). Saldanha continues to foster and develop projects for the Brazilian and American markets, such as his Netflix series “Invisible City”, released in February 2021.

This event was co-sponsored by the Design Dept, as part of their Design Dialogue Speaker series.

Kaeru Film, Screening and Q&A

(Oct 2020)

“Kaeru”, the 2019 thesis film directed by Denise Chan and produced by Brandon Louie & Allie Turner, had its official public launch on YouTube on October 23rd. The SHM Film Collective hosted a virtual film screening and panel Q&A where current SHM students and alumni were able to view the film and follow up with questions for the filmmakers about the process of creating it

.

“Since Kaeru was wrapping up its festival run and we were preparing to post it online, we thought it would be fun to debut it with a live event! My good friends and crew-mates Allie Turner, Brandon Louie, and Rebecca Chan helped to create a making-of presentation, and I hope that all who attended enjoyed the panel and were able to learn a bit about the process of creating an animated short film. I’m happy we got to collaborate with the SHM Film Collective and give back in some way to the community that helped to support our film in the first place.
